Query? Or Synopsis? How to Decide
Ever wonder whether a publisher prefers a query letter, a synopsis, a cover letter or a proposal? Or any combination of the above? Each achieves a different purpose, as our own Roz Denny Fox will explain at our March meeting.
Roz should know, since she's writing her 45th book for Harlequin. She sold the company her first Harlequin Romance in 1989 and since then has written for a variety of lines within the Harlequin imprint, which is distributed worldwide. Roz's books have received a number of industry nominations and awards, including the Golden Quill and the Holt Medallion. Her August 2007 title for Harlequin, A Secret to Tell You, has been nominated best Everlasting Love book of 2007 by Romantic Times Review magazine, and her December book, Looking for Sophie, is RT-nominated as best SuperRomance of 2007.
Nominations and awards aside, Roz says the most satisfying part of her career has been the friends she's made in the writing community. Hearing from readers who say that one of her books has touched them in a personal fashion is the greatest reward for, as she puts it, "having ventured into the business of writing."
Morning Speaker: Linda Reed
Know the Romance Publishing Territory
As we embark on our Write for the Roses journey to finish (and revise and submit and, hopefully, sell) a novel by January 2009, our chapter president, Linda Reed, is going to give us tips to understand what exactly it is we're shooting for so we can better hit our targets. Struggling with the differences between category and single titles? Wondering where truth stops and rumor starts in market trends? Wanting to learn what is selling, who is buying, and how much they'll pay? With the help of our published authors, Linda's going to share with us how to get the accurate information to succeed beyond finishing our novels this year.
Linda comes to us with a background in organizational psychology and a wide range of professional experience. Recently retired, Linda has founded alternative learning programs for at-risk students and served as an organizational development consultant and leadership coach for the City of Los Angeles.
